Behavior and Immunity (Routledge Revivals) 1st Edition

Immunology  Comments Off on Behavior and Immunity (Routledge Revivals) 1st Edition
Jan 072024

First publishe din 1992: Find out by reading Behavior and Immunity, a new volume that consists of papers presented at the Scientific Meeting of the Australian Behavioral Immunology Group (ABIG) held in November, 1990, at the University of Newcastle, Australia. The ABIG was established in response to the need to provide a forum for the presentation of data and exchange of ideas regarding the concept of brain, behavior, and immunity. The papers presented in this volume represent the state of the art in a number of areas where these interactions have been studied. Information is presented regarding the biochemistry, neurophysiology, and endocrinology of nervous system/immune system interactions; the role of behavioral conditioning in immunity; the effects of sleep and biological rhythms on immune function; the role of lifestyle, life events, and exercise in immunity; and the impact of psychoimmunology in clinical medicine. Researchers in immunology, psychology, neurology; physicians; and lay people with an interest in the interaction between lifestyle and health will find a wealth of information in this stimulating volume.

The Immune System: A Very Short Introduction (Very Short Introductions) Illustrated Edition

Immunology  Comments Off on The Immune System: A Very Short Introduction (Very Short Introductions) Illustrated Edition
Jan 062024

The immune system is central to human health and the focus of much medical research. Growing understanding of the immune system, and especially the creation of immune memory (long lasting protection), which can be harnessed in the design of vaccines, have been major breakthroughs in medicine.

In this
Very Short Introduction, Paul Klenerman describes the immune system, and how it works in health and disease. In particular he focuses on the human immune system, considering how it evolved, the basic rules that govern its behavior, and the major health threats where it is important. The immune system comprises a series of organs, cells and chemical messengers which work together as a team to provide defence against infection. Klenerman discusses these components, the critical signals that trigger them and how they exert their protective effects, including so-called “innate” immune responses, which react very fast to infection, and “adaptive” immune responses, which have huge diversity and a capacity to recognize and defend against a massive array of micro-organisms. Klenerman also considers what happens when our immune systems fail to be activated effectively, leading to serious infections, problems with inherited diseases, and also HIV/AIDS. At the opposite extreme, as Klenerman shows, an over-exaggerated immune response leads to inflammatory diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis and Rheumatoid Arthritis, as well as allergy and asthma. Finally he looks at the “Immune system v2.o” – how immune therapies and vaccines can be advanced to protect us against the major diseases of the 21st century.

ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.

Immunology, Pharmacology  Comments Off on Personalized Immunosuppression in Transplantation: Role of Biomarker Monitoring and Therapeutic Drug Monitoring 1st Edition
Jan 052024

Personalized Immunosuppression in Transplantation: Role of Biomarker Monitoring and Therapeutic Drug Monitoring provides coverage of the various approaches to monitoring immunosuppressants in transplant patients, including the most recently developed biomarker monitoring methods, pharmacogenomics approaches, and traditional therapeutic drug monitoring.

The book is written for pathologists, toxicologists, and transplant surgeons who are involved in the management of transplant patients, offering them in-depth coverage of the management of immunosuppressant therapy in transplant patients with the goal of maximum benefit from drug therapy and minimal risk of drug toxicity.

This book also provides practical guidelines for managing immunosuppressant therapy, including the therapeutic ranges of various immunosuppressants, the pitfalls of methodologies used for determination of these immunosuppressants in whole blood or plasma, appropriate pharmacogenomics testing for organ transplant recipients, and when biomarker monitoring could be helpful.

  • Focuses on the personalized management of immunosuppression therapy in individual transplant patients
  • Presents information that applies to many areas, including gmass spectrometry, assay design, assay validation, clinical chemistry, and clinical pathology
  • Provides practical guidelines for the initial selection and subsequent modifications of immunosuppression therapy in individual transplant patients
  • Reviews the latest research in biomarker monitoring in personalizing immunosuppressant therapy, including potential new markers not currently used, but with great potential for future use
  • Explains how monitoring graft-derived, circulating, cell free DNA has shown promise in the early detection of transplant injury in liquid biopsy

Transplantation Immunology: Methods and Protocols (Methods in Molecular Biology, 333) 2006th Edition

Immunology  Comments Off on Transplantation Immunology: Methods and Protocols (Methods in Molecular Biology, 333) 2006th Edition
Jan 052024

Leading clinicians and scientists in solid organ transplantation review the current status of the field and describe cutting-edge techniques for detecting the immune response to the allografted organ. The authors present the latest techniques for HLA typing, detecting HLA antibodies, and monitoring T-cell response, and examine more specialized methods utilizing proteomics, laser dissection microscopy, and real-time polymerase chain reaction. The area of tolerance induction and reprogramming of the immune system is also covered, along with a discussion of up-to-date methods of organ preservation, of today’s optimal immunosuppressive drug regimens, as well as the difficulty of mimicking chronic rejection in experimental models. Introductory chapters provide a theoretical update on current practices in renal, liver, islet, and lung transplantation and on the pathways of antigen presentation and chronic rejection.

NETosis: Immunity, Pathogenesis and Therapeutics 1st Edition

Immunology, Pathology  Comments Off on NETosis: Immunity, Pathogenesis and Therapeutics 1st Edition
Jan 042024

NETosis: Immunity, Pathogenesis and Therapeutics takes a focused approach to the clinical aspects of NETosis and drug development, bringing critical findings. Chapters introduce NETosis, consider mechanisms and antimicrobial strategies regulating NETosis, examine NETosis in neonates, explore the role of NETosis in autoimmunity, delve into NETosis and other diseases, and present therapeutic approaches for dysregulated NETosis. Since Brinkamm, et al, discovered an unrecognized neutrophil anti-microbial mechanism responsible for the extracellular killing of invading pathogens in 2004, the novel process in which nuclear chromatin de-condenses and DNA is ejected into the extra cellular environment, trapping and inactivating tissue pathogens has rapidly evolved.

Presents an up-to-date and detailed analysis of NETosis
Brings together critical findings on NETosis as a comparatively novel immune mechanism
Focuses on the clinical aspects of NETosis that lead to drug development
Covers the topic with a cogency and passion that is based on years of scientific research
