The classic text that covers both the basic and clinical aspects of neurology – updated with the latest therapeutic advances

A Doody’s Core Title for 2019!

Since 1989, Clinical Neurology has helped students, residents, and clinicians understand the link between basic neuroscience and current approaches in diagnosis and treatment. Applauded for its practice-oriented approach to neurology based on the patient’s presenting symptoms, this full-color resource delivers the clearest and most efficient introduction to the field available today.

As with each new edition, the authors have retained and refined the instructional material relating to the function of the nervous system in health and disease and have updated the text with the latest diagnostic and therapeutic advances. Recent discoveries in molecular biology and immunology have led to the approval of new drugs for the treatment of multiple sclerosis (alemtuzumab), spinal muscular atrophy (nusinersen), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (edaravone), and Huntington’s disease (deutetrabenazine). These and other therapeutic advances are included in this new edition.

Presented in full color, Clinical Neurology is enhanced by chapter outlines that facilitate a quick review of each topic, an emphasis on the neurologic examination and history taking as the cornerstone of diagnosis, and treatment protocols that reflect the most recent advances in the field.

If you are in need of a clear, well-written introduction to neurology as practiced on the wards and in an outpatient setting, your search ends here.

The Neurologic Examination: Scientific Basis for Clinical Diagnosis Illustrated Edition

Neurology/Neurosurgery  Comments Off on The Neurologic Examination: Scientific Basis for Clinical Diagnosis Illustrated Edition
Jun 152024

Whereas most book about the neurologic examination are disease and anatomy oriented, The Neurologic Examination: Scientific Basis for Clinical Diagnosis focuses on a pathophysiological approach to the nervous system. The authors emphasize that the scientific interpretation of symptoms obtained from carefully taking the patient’s history and noting signs found during physical examination are essential in the diagnosis of neurologic diseases, even if laboratory testing, such as electrophysiology and neuroimaging, are more widely used. This book aims to provide a bridge from the basic sciences such as anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and molecular biology to the neurologic symptoms. Neurologic examinations provide the foundation for diagnosis, and only after a thorough and expertly executed examination can one begin to incorporate laboratory testing and treatment.

The Neurologic Examination: Scientific Basis for Clinical Diagnosis, based on the widely successful Japanese book Diagnosis of Neurological Diseases (Igakushoin, Japan, second edition 2013) by Dr. Shibasaki, hopes to revitalize the use of neurologic examinations before jumping into laboratory testing. Doing so can help cut down on time, patient and physician anxiety, and unnecessary testing expenses. This book is a must-read for all practicing neurologists, residents, and medical students.

Key Features Include
? The chapters are arranged in order of the actual steps in a neurologic examination;
? Highly illustrated with figures and tables indicative of the neurologic signs and symptoms that may appear during the given step; and
? 99 discussion boxes are inserted throughout to provide a more in-depth look at particular topics without interrupting the reading flow of the text.

Neurology: A Queen Square Textbook 3rd Edition

Neurology/Neurosurgery  Comments Off on Neurology: A Queen Square Textbook 3rd Edition
May 072024

neurology

A fully updated and authoritative neurology resource

The Queen Square Textbook has established itself as a favourite companion to clinical neurosciences training and teaching around the world, whilst retaining its role as an invaluable reference guide for physicians and other healthcare professionals working in neurology, general medicine and related specialties.

The book continues to reflect the core values essential to the practice of clinical neurology in the 21st century. The third edition has been extensively revised and updated to take account of the rapid pace of progress in the neurosciences and patient care. Contemporary neurology has been changed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the climate emergency and the growing inequalities in healthcare resources. The new edition has been extensively revised to reflect these challenges and affords a greater emphasis on management and rehabilitation whilst continuing to reflect the coherence of a text produced from a single, closely-knit, centre of excellence.

Highlights of the new edition include:

  • An updated approach to clinical examination, decision-making and diagnosis
  • New developments in neuroimmunology, pathology and genetics
  • Neuropalliative care
  • Ethical and legal issues in clinical neurology
  • The latest developments in the understanding and management of stroke, movement disorders, epilepsy, cognitive impairment, multiple sclerosis, infections, myelopathy, anterior horn cell disease, disorders of nerve and muscle, neuro-oncology, neurological disorders of hearing, balance and vision, and the neurological care of critical illness, sleep, neuropsychiatry, pain, autonomic and urological disorders.
  • An emphasis on treatment and rehabilitation of the person with a neurological disease

The new edition marks a significant transition to reflect contemporary neurological practice during uncertain times. It mirrors the enormous changes in investigation, diagnosis and treatment that have occurred in recent years whilst maintaining the underlying principle that we do not treat diagnoses but, rather, we care for people affected by neurological disease.

Multiple Sclerosis (Contemporary Neurology Series, 84) Illustrated Edition

Neurology/Neurosurgery  Comments Off on Multiple Sclerosis (Contemporary Neurology Series, 84) Illustrated Edition
Apr 052024

This latest edition to the ‘Contemporary Neurology Series’ will fill one of the few remaining ‘neurologic gaps’ within the Series. ‘Multiple Sclerosis,’ written solely by Moses Rodriguez, Orhun Kantarci and Istvan Pirko of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN will offer proven, effective treatments for specific presentations and symptoms of multiple sclerosis along with a pathophysiological explanation of why they work. It bridges a needed gap between overly simplistic therapy manuals and basic science texts that discuss human disease only insofar as it mimics what is observed in animal models of the disease in the laboratory. Additionally, it seeks to offer an efficient integrative approach to symptomatic treatment to avoid over-medication and side effects. It discusses the heterogeneous causes of the disease and the need to develop individualized treatments that address the basic pathophysiologic processes that characterize each patient’s disease with the future goal of

individualized medicine.

‘Multiple Sclerosis’ covers both the basic research aspects of MS: epidemiology, neuropathology, genetics, and immunology as well as the treatment options associated with the MS patient: sleep, steroids, pharma, neuropsychology, and growth factors (to name a few). ‘Multiple Sclerosis’ will focus on the medical treatment – drug treatment – of MS rather than on physical medicine and rehabilitation (not the author’s strength). The authors will also make ample use of flow diagrams, bulleted points, and tables to help the reader better understand MS and its etiology and treatment.
